Eating in San Francisco - Seafood

San Francisco has such a wide variety of food options that deciding where to eat while you are visiting here is a really tough decision.  You can find any type of food that you are looking for.  Seafood is a great option to look focus on while you are here as much of it is as fresh as you can get it.

Fisherman's Wharf as its name suggests is a great place to find lots of restaurants that focus on seafood, but a walk down the piers will offer you many other options, many of which are less touristy and really doing seafood well.

1. Hog Island Oyster Company

Address: Ferry Building, One, #11; San
Phone:(415) 391-7117

Food: 4.5 Stars
Service: 4 Stars
Location: 4.5

Located in the Ferry Building Hog Island Oyster Company is a great location to enjoy a meal out on the pier on a beautiful day.  As you enjoy your meal you can watch the catamaran ferries come and go and see the Bay Bridge from your table as well.  Hog Island Oyster Company has multiple locations including a location in Napa Valley at the Oxbow, but we were very pleased with our meal here in San Francisco.

The clam chowder at Hog Island Oyster Company is unique as they use clams in the shell to elevate the dish.  The Oyster Bar Mix is a great way to sample a variety of different oysters from both the west and east coast.

2. Fog Harbor Fish House

Address: Pier 39; San Francisco, CA
Phone: (415) 421-2442
Website

Food: 4.0
Service: 3.5
Location: 4.0

Fog Harbor Fish House is a top restaurant on Pier 39 with a great location on the front corner of the pier and waterfront views out to the Golden Gate bridge if you are fortunate enough to get a seat in the main dining room.  There was one dish that stood out to us here, and all three of us ordered the Scallops on Crab Risotto.

The clam chowder at Fog Harbor is a pretty traditional clam chowder with plenty of seafood and not overloaded with potatoes.  The bread here is made from dough that they get from Boudin Bakery but is baked fresh at the restaurant and brought to the table nice and warm.

Be warned that if they ask you if you want to eat outside, decline this offer especially if it is cool outside or if there is any wind.  The outdoor seating is not good, and we actually moved from it after being seated.  Also, know that they have two dining areas one that is much nicer and than the other and has the views.  Try and make a reservation early and ask to sit in the main dining area to get the best experience possible here.
