Moomers Ice Cream - Traverse City, MI

 

Moomers Ice Cream is a pretty famous ice cream shop near Traverse City, Michigan.  Moomers is all about the experience which makes this a unique stop on your road trip as much as the ice cream.  Started in 1998 on land adjacent to the family dairy farm that provides the milk for their ice cream, Moomers grew in fame on May 28, 2008 when viewers voted on Good Morning America as the nation's best spot to get ice cream.

Moomers makes 160 different flavors of ice cream and is still a hot spot today.   The founder Nancy Plummer was driven by "The hope was to provide a unique premium product in a country atmosphere, to share the world of agriculture with others, employ local young adults, and provide a family oriented place to enjoy with family and friends." This is exactly what they have done.

The popularity of Moomers is still strong today and they are still serving great ice cream.  As you would expect there was a bit of a line when we arrived at Moomers which took us about 20 minutes to get through.  Be warned that while waiting in line make sure you find the list of what is available on that day, as if you look on their website at all their flavors you may fall in love with something that is not available.

They are well known for their Cherries Moobilee ice cream which features a combination of local cherries, fudge and brownies.  They also offer the Michigan favorite of Superman ice cream, which they call the Super Moo. Superman ice cream is a blend of three flavors with the colors yellow, red and blue involved, but the flavors can change. We ended up getting three single scoop cups so that we could try these three plus the Oreo Mint Meltdown.

We decided to eat outside so we could enjoy the setting, overlooking the rolling hills and the farm where it all starts.  Once you make it inside one of the team will take care of your order from start to finish.  They are all working hard, it just takes a little time to scoop up all that goodness for everyone.  They also serve up a selection of other ice cream treats, such as sundaes, milkshakes and floats.

Moomers also distributes out to some other shops so we found a store serving Moomers products in Leland and a couple of other locations on our road trip.

Visiting Bethesda Maryland

I have come to Bethesda Maryland a number of times for work and always look forward to returning.  Located north of Washington D.C., I find that it is easy to get to the National Mall and other Washington D.C. attractions, without being in the hustle and bustle.  Bethesda is the home of Walter Reed Medical Center and the National Institutes of Health.  It has a vibrant downtown area with lots of interesting food options. Getting around in Bethesda is easy by car and is close enough to places to stay that you can either walk or take uber.  The Metro goes right through the area as well so it is possible to catch the metro back to Regan National Airport or down to go and see the monuments and museums. California Cheese Trail

 While visiting the Cowgirl Creamery Barn Store in Point Reyes Station, I learned bout the California Cheese Trail from a brochure.  I love the idea of any type of food or beverage trail, so I grabbed the brochures and started looking at them.  I was surprised to learn how many different creameries there were in the state of California.  I enjoy visiting cheese factories and buying cheese directly from the factory where you find many different varieties of cheese that you will not find in stores because they are done in small batches.  We were only able to visit one of the creameries while we were on our trip.  We could have done a lot more if we had known about the cheese trail ahead of time.
